Many people still associate Hoyerswerda with the terrible riots in the fall of ’91. Even more than 30 years later, these events still shape the image of the city. As awful as the events were, the city has changed a lot since then. Acknowledging and looking at what once was is important. But it is equally important to look at what has happened since then. After the fall of 1991, a lot of energy was put into youth and educational work in Hoyerswerda. Numerous initiatives, associations and institutions were founded. Since then, society, administration, politics, culture, education and business have been working even closer together. Hand in hand, these stakeholders are developing strategies, implementing various projects and are also jointly tackling upcoming challenges.
