New Bundeswehr base to be established in the district of Bautzen

The German Armed Forces will expand their presence in Saxony and establish a logistics battalion in Bernsdorf in the district of Bautzen.

The plan to station a Bundeswehr unit in the region was the subject of the agreement between the federal and state governments on the coal phase-out in January 2020, and the decision in principle was confirmed in a joint declaration of intent between the Federal Ministry of Defence and the Free State of Saxony in March 2021. The Free State of Saxony had pledged its support to the Bundeswehr and the Federal Ministry of Defence in realising the project, which is significant beyond the region.

The Free State had proposed various locations in the districts of Bautzen and Görlitz for the stationing of Logistics Battalion 471, including a site in Bernsdorf-Straßgräbchen. The Federal Ministry of Defence made the decision on the location on its own responsibility after appropriate consideration and, not least, taking into account military requirements and expediency.

The Federal Ministry of Defence’s stationing decision envisages providing the troops with a new home for around 700 soldiers and additional support staff in the municipality of Bernsdorf. Ultimately, a new Bundeswehr base with around 800 posts will be created.

This will have a positive impact on the entire region and the surrounding communities and towns will also benefit.
