Sorb Perspectives in Transition: Kick-off Meeting with the State Commissioner

When Hoyerswerda talks about transformation, the conversation goes far beyond structural change, energy or new industrial projects. Cultural developments are increasingly shaping the path into the future – and the Sorbian community is an integral part of that journey. At the beginning of November, a new chapter opened: the inaugural meeting between Franziska Brech, the Commissioner of the Saxon State Government for Sorbian Affairs, and the municipal Sorbian representatives.

On 6 November, Sorbian representatives from several municipalities and institutions came together for the first time, including a delegate from TD Deutsche Klimakompressor GmbH in Bernsdorf. Also newly represented in this round: Thomas Korch, who will in future contribute the perspectives of the Bautzen district.

A group of seven people is standing on a sunny terrace with a backdrop of historic buildings. They are standing close together and smiling at the camera. Some are wearing jackets or scarves, others lighter clothing. One person in the centre is holding a colourful object in their hands. The atmosphere appears friendly and professional.

Such a kick-off can be compared to the moment when a new project team sits around a table for the first time: many things are still open, but everyone knows the direction is right. Sorbian culture is to become more visible, better connected and more firmly embedded in regional development processes.

Hoyerswerda lies at the heart of a bilingual cultural region. The Sorbian language, traditions and vibrant association culture are a natural part of everyday life here – and serve as a cultural anchor in a time of profound change.

Regular dialogue at both state and municipal level can generate several impulses:

Stronger integration into regional development processes
Cultural identity and social cohesion play an increasingly important role in structural change. Sorbian actors can contribute valuable perspectives here.

Greater visibility in the everyday life of towns and municipalities
Whether bilingual initiatives, educational projects or cultural events – coordinated cooperation facilitates implementation and funding.

New networks between administrations, companies and cultural organisations
The fact that an industrial company like TD Deutsche Klimakompressor GmbH appoints a Sorbian representative shows that Sorbian affairs have long moved beyond administrative boundaries.

Whenever the future is discussed, the question “Who are we as a region?” becomes central. Sorbian culture is a key part of this answer. Structural change creates space for new ideas: What might bilingual city marketing look like? What role could Sorbian themes play in education, cultural projects or intercultural communication? And how can tradition and innovation be further developed together?

The kick-off meeting lays the organisational foundation for this. The upcoming sessions will show which concrete projects will emerge. For Hoyerswerda, this network is an important component in ensuring that transformation is shaped not only economically but also culturally in a sustainable and future-oriented way.
