The Bürgerzentrum Hoyerswerda became a key meeting place on 24 November for conversations about civic engagement, urban development and the ongoing transformation in Lusatia. As part of his visit within the format “Orte der Begegnung”, the Federal President toured the Kulturfabrik, explored local projects, listened to community actors and gained insights into a wide range of grassroots initiatives.

After the official welcome and signing of the city’s Golden Book, he visited the Gundermann Schaltzentrale before joining members of the Youth Council in an open-space setting. There, he highlighted the importance of young people’s commitment to shaping their city. Hands-on impressions followed at the Repair Café, where he paid special tribute to the volunteers’ work.

At Café Auszeit, the head of state took part in a discussion with representatives from the city administration, civil-society organisations and academia. The conversation focused on the contribution of civic engagement, current challenges in urban development, and the role of regional identity in ensuring a sustainable future for Lusatia.

In the afternoon, Hoyerswerda again moved into the spotlight as Deutschlandradio broadcast the program “Zur Diskussion” live from the Bürgerzentrum. After an interview with the Federal President, experts and local stakeholders discussed what it takes to make the region’s transformation a success. The President followed the full panel, underscoring his interest in the local exchange.
